The Crab House Closes After Three Decades

Another Miami landmark restaurant has closed.

The Crab House closed Sunday evening, marking an end to more than 30 years of waterfront dining.

Designed to look like a lighthouse, the Crab House on the 79th Street Causeway was a beacon for people wanting a decent seafood meal at a reasonable price since 1975. Both locals and tourists flocked for Sunday dinner in a nautical atmosphere at the restaurant, which consistently drew a crowd for more than three decades.

Moms, dads, kids, and grandmas would all don bibs and share a signature crab house feast, a "titanic" portion of lobster, crab, mussels, and sausage.

The restaurant wasn't trendy, and the menu wasn't filled with foams and edible flowers, but it played host to many graduation celebrations, family reunions, and birthdays. For generations of Miamians, it was the place where you gathered with family to break bread and crack crabs.

According to a manager who answered the phone, the Crab House closed this past Sunday after the restaurant's lease expired. The Crab House in Edgewater, New Jersey (directly across the river from Manhattan), remains open. Short Order has a call in to parent company Landry's and will update this post with additional information.
