As the Dolphins prepare to play the Atlanta Falcons in their most suspenseful home opener in years, it looks like Coconut Grove has gained unofficial status as the Miami-Dade capital of sports bars with the opening of Duffy's Sports Grill at Cocowalk today.

This is the second Miami-Dade location for the local south Florida sports bar chain, with the first Miami Duffy's located in North Miami Beach.

The new location marks a new look for the chain, with brushed aluminum fixtures and large photos of local sports celebrities gracing the wall. More importantly are the number of televisions -- 90 in all, which basically guarantees sports sensory overload.

The restaurant officially opens today, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. in which Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado will welcome the restaurant to the neighborhood. From 3 to 8 p.m., Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington from the Coast FM will be on-site with giveaways, including free meals for a year at the restaurant.

Duffy's CocoWalk will also host official Dolphins watch parties in conjunction with Corona and WQAM radio with Corona Girls and offering $3 Corona Light pints and $4 stadium mugs, as well as various swag.

The bar at Duffy's: good viewing guaranteed.
Short Order was invited to the sports grill's VIP night yesterday, where friends and family tested out the restaurant. The place was packed with people drinking beer and two-for-one bar drinks like the Tito's Peach Tea (sweet tea spiked with Tito's Handmade Vodka and peach schnapps), and munching on wings.

Chicken wings two ways: spicy orange ginger and traditional hot ($10.99 for 10). Our advice? Go for atomic.
Is Duffy's a great date night spot or the place for gourmands? No and no. Duffy's is loud and brash with adequate fare and cold beer. Frankly, by the end of the evening we were seeking a dark, quiet bedroom.

But with football season upon us, it's a clean, modern, and inexpensive place to watch the game and grab a few beers with friends. Time will tell, however, if this large and highly polished mecca of sports entertainment will attract more people to Coconut Grove or will negatively impact the current sports bars in the neighborhood like Grove Spot, Sandbar, and Mr. Moe's as game time viewing spots.
