The standard American diet is deadly. Thanks to processed foods, trans fats, and massive portion sizes, diseases like diabetes are rampant. Truth is, we'd be better off eating out of our own backyards.

At Johnson & Wales University's North Miami campus, students have cultivated an edible landscape with over 100 species of fruits and vegetables. Tomorrow, you can tour this garden, enjoy free food samples, check out cooking demos, and lots of other good-for-you ventures -- all in the name of Food Day, a holiday that promotes healthy diets and sustainable eating.

The celebration will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tours of the edible garden and landscape will run every 30 minutes until 2:30. You can also nosh on nibbles and check out food prep demos from JWU chefs. They'll be using their own produce to whip up healthy recipes.

Chef Angel Diaz will be making udon noodles with Florida Gulf shrimp and a lemongrass mango chili sauce. Other participants will be preparing salads, drinks, and desserts.

In the evening, the university will be showing the documentary A Place at the Table. The flick investigates hunger in America. The screening begins at 7:45 p.m. in the Beverage Lab.

If you can't make it to either events, you can check out JWU's healthy demos on their YouTube channel.

Johnson & Wales University's Food Day celebration is tomorrow, October 24, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at JWU's North Miami Campus.
