Cookie King Delivers Colossal Sweets to South Miami

Cookie delivery has become a thing. Several late-night delivery services have popped up over the past couple of months, but only two offer more healthful, eggless, vegan alternatives. Om Nom Nom Cookies was Miami's first fully vegan cookie business to take treats from the oven to your doorstep. Now there's a second option. All hail the Cookie King.

The Cookie King called us up after reading our latest cookie coverage and insisted we try his vegan creations. We agreed, and an hour later someone showed up at our doorstep with just about the best gift in the world -- two boxes filled with king-size cookies fresh out of the oven. We sat down with the Cookie King to talk dough (or lack thereof) over a glass of milk and his delicious concoctions.

The Cookie King (let's call him "CK") prefers that his identity be concealed. His mom taught him how to bake as a child, and he's been baking on a daily basis for the past four years. Here's the sweet story:

'Twas was the night before his wedding when CK began baking to calm his nerves. "I ended up baking over 100 cookies," he says. "Everyone at our wedding had cookies." It was then that all of his friends and family got a taste of his gift and haven't left him alone since. "Now they don't let me show up at any gathering without cookies." Their persistence paid off and led CK to incorporate his business.

CK has a full-time job and a newborn baby, so his cookie delivery window is a bit limited. Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. is cookie time, but weekends he's free to bake all day. His delivery area focuses on South Miami and extends to Coral Gables and Pinecrest. "I want to start out with that and, hopefully as the business evolves, expand my offerings and deliveries." He lives near the University of Miami and believes that's the perfect area to target all the college students with the munchies and sweet teeth.

Want a cookie? You'll need to order a $10 minimum, which will get you two cookies and a glass of milk (each cookie costs $4, and an eight-ounce glass of milk is $2). But these treats aren't run-of-the-mill cookies -- they are colossal. A single cookie is about the size of your face. And you also have to remember they are made without eggs or butter. Getting your cookie fix with this healthier alternative will certainly pay off in the long run, even it if costs you a couple of extra bucks now. You'll also have to wait an hour after placing your order because cookies are baked on the spot and delivered warm to your doorstep.

So how does CK do it? He uses all organic ingredients such as flour and cane juice evaporated sugar. Instead of butter, dough, and eggs, he uses a cholesterol-free, organic, and vegan alternative. He's experimented with various ingredients to replace the texture and consistency of eggs and has failed miserably several times. "I tried all sorts of things," he says. "Vinegar, agave, water, bananas. Bananas were the worst." Finally, he discovered applesauce and stuck with it. "It's been what's worked so far, but I am still exploring and constantly trying to improve my recipe, so this could change." We couldn't even taste the applesauce.

Cookie flavors include traditional chocolate chip, triple chocolate chip, and oatmeal raisin. CK also takes custom orders, such as chocolate chip walnut, macadamia white chocolate chip, and chocolate chip pecan. Go crazy -- if CK has the ingredients, he'll accommodate your request. We tried the three traditional flavors plus macadamia white chocolate chip, and they were all spectacular, with a moist center and crunchy outer edge -- even the oatmeal raisin (bonus: oatmeal lowers cholesterol). If we had to pick one of the traditional flavors, though, we'd go for the triple chocolate chip.

The only real problem is that because they are all organic and vegan cookies, their shelf life is relatively short. "After two full days, they won't really taste the same," CK warns. The fact that his cookie delivery window is three hours and restricted to South Miami is another drawback. We also wonder how he will balance baking and driving if he gets an influx of orders. "My dream is to get enough business to eventually be able to open a storefront and make other vegan goodies, like cinnabuns and cupcakes."

We hope he succeeds, because his cookies are damn delicious. In the meantime, our advice to the Cookie King is to expand his reign with storefronts, as Om Nom Nom, House of V, and Peace-a-Cake have done. We could totally see these cookies killing it at Panther Coffee.

The Cookie King is a cookie delivery service serving South Miami, Coral Gables, and Pinecrest Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 305-510-7330 or visit thecookieking.com.
