Hannya to open on Brickell Avenue this September.
Sushi never goes out of style.

The Japanese restaurant Hannya is set to open in September at 1060 Brickell Ave. As recently reported in South Florida Business Journal, a 16-year lease worth $3.5 million was recently brokered for the restaurant's space. Hannya will be walking distance from Mary Brickell Village, and will be located next to select restaurants such as La Lupita and L'entrecote de Paris.

There are no amateurs sushi chefs behind this new downtown dig: Hannya is the creative work of Larry Chi, an elite South Florida chef as well as a third generation restaurant owner. Chi made a name for himself in 1993 with the opening of the wildly popular Akashi Sushi in South Miami, and the subsequent opening of Akashi in Coconut Grove in 2008. Hannya, which means "wisdom" in Japanese, will follow suit and serve Japanese food, in addition to other Asian-inspired dishes.

Chi and his wife Barbara recognized a shortage of Vietnamese restaurants in Miami. While the two Akashi locations have remained solely Japanese restaurants, this new project will venture into other areas and will give the people of Miami a broader view of Asian cuisine.

"We didn't incorporate Vietnamese food into the Akashi menu, but we wanted to include it on the [Hannya] menu," said Chi, "and we especially will focus on Saturday and Sunday brunch."

Bring us all the Pho.
Chi said the restaurant won't be formal or upscale, but might have somewhat of a more high-end atmosphere than Akashi, featuring brick and wood in the interior. There are also plans to do landscaping outside the restaurant in addition to having outdoor seating like at Sugarcane raw bar & grill.

Brunch and pho? Count us in, and don't hold back on the sriracha.
