This past Saturday, high above the city, in the penthouse of a Midtown condo, thirty or so South Florida foodies got together to eat at the whims of Chef Jeremiah Bullfrog.

The Cobaya Gourmet Guinea Pigs are a web enabled network of adventurous eaters who are looking for unconventional fare not available on Miami restaurant dinner menus. Kevin Jones of MiamiWineTasters.com said, "We find a chef with good skill and imagination and say we'll be the guinea pig. There's no restriction on what they make because they're not selling it in a restaurant where people won't eat it. Restaurants are a business, and that can keep a chef from really experimenting. It's not for everyone, you don't get to order. You just show up, you pay, and you eat."

Events are organized by local bloggers Chowfather and Frodnesor, who said "More people are interested than I thought. Miami doesn't get a lot of attention as a food town, but there are a lot of talented chefs here."

Here are some pictures from the event....

Champagne + chocolate = wet panties.

Get in on the action when Morton's The Steakhouse (1200 Brickell Ave., Miami) presents An Evening of Decadence: Champagne and Chocolate Tastings on Wednesday, October 21st.

The night begins with Morton's signature hors d'oeuvres like smoked salmon wedges, broiled sea scallops and petite filet mignon sandwiches matched with Piper Sonoma Brut wine.

Next, a press release says, "Guests will take part in the pairing of Champagne and chocolate using sensory vials." The vials use scents like lilac to add an extra dimension to the tasting experience.

Featured champagnes are Piper Heidsieck Brut and Piper Heidsieck Rose Sauvage. They will be paired with chocolates like Gianduia, Ambrosia White Truffle, Naga, and Gogi Berry.

The event is priced at $45 per person. Call 305-400-9990 to reserve your spot, or visit mortons.com/miami for more info.

Be Organic is a catering operation on a mission to spread the gospel of healthy food that tastes good. Founding members Chad Cherry, Roosevelt Desir, Kirk Nelson, and Andre Walker are on what they call a "takeover tour to go into places and educate people about the organic lifestyle." In September the group will begin a bicycle pilgrimage across the state of Florida that will take them on a 40 mile a day journey for 40 consecutive days.

"We're pedaling for better health, nutrition, holisitics, and green jobs" says Chad. Be Organic's reasons for spreading the benefits of the organic lifestyle are personal, two of the chefs are diabetic and one is a cancer survivor. The four chefs seek to show that anybody can eat healthy and enjoy it. "We take the health benefits of organics and incorporate them into food that tastes good, that's the way to make it for everybody. The only thing stopping people is education. Most people think it's too expensive, that's just not true. We're here to show you how to do it."

Here are some more Be Organic images and web info to find out more about the movement.

Living Raw, Sex, and the City

fruitarian cover girl.jpg

This girl here, livin' somewhere in Miami, name of Suvine, pictured above, has a public, online diary documenting her life as a  fruitarian. What's that mean? According to Wikipedia, "Fruitarians (or fructarians) eat in principle only the fruit of plants." No meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, nothing cooked, all raw, all the time, fruits, nuts, seeds, berries. Oooh baby, baby, it's a wild world. Me myself, I can't get down like that, but she's all the way out there with it...

Cook a Dragon Millipede

Dragon Millipede.jpg According to a report issued today by the World Wildlife Fund, the Pink Dragon Millipede is one of 1000 new species discovered in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia in the last 10 years. Okay, so the thing has a cyanide-producing gland. But that doesn't mean your favorite TV chef can't use it as an ingredient. Everyone at Short Order agrees that new animal species discoveries should be quickly exploited and leveraged into culinary trends. Here are our top 5 epicurean uses for the Dragon Millipede.

5.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Start yours right with a Millitoast.
MILLIBREAD.jpg4. Boring soup with a leaf in it? Just add poisonous insects.

3. Who needs pork? The finest bacon in the world comes from the pink dragon millipede. Rare and expensive, its satisfying crunch is second to none.
MILLISALAD.jpg2. Next time you and your rich friends are yammering about deforestation, world hunger, and corporate-controlled governments, have some cheese and crackers garnished with cyanide-infused milliflesh.
MILLICHEEZNCRCKRS.jpg1. Nothing's better than pizza, but a pizza is only as good as its toppings. Impress the neighbors by pulling your next pizza party out of a hat called nothing tastes better than newly discovered species.

Last Night: Anise Opens in Miami's Uppereast Side

Seventy-eighth Street east of Biscayne was like a rock concert parking lot last night, albeit a rock concert full of sophisticates. I’m talking a mob scene the likes that block hasn’t seen since forever. And while the crowd in question wasn’t really there to hear their favorite band, they were there to greet some of their favorite people and to eat some of their favorite food. Why? Well, because Anise opened last night, that’s why.
