You know a destination restaurant is worth the effort when not a drawbridge, cargo train, nor interstate construction can come between you and your meal.

Such was the case when a gaggle of Grove- and Gables-based Tweeters severed the data stream for a few hours to taste real life in the skilled hands of NAOE Chef Kevin Cory.  The hike up to Sunny Isles Beach was never more worth it, despite the City of Miami's valiant effort to the contrary.

In it together

Back in prehistoric times, you'd call up a friend and watch your favorite TV show together.  You'd laugh, maybe you'd both call out one of the characters for doing something stupid -- or each other for disagreeing on that assessment.  Maybe you'd give your undivided attention to the screen and save the commentary for commercial break.  Boy, have times changed with Twitter.

Miami on the Cheap Talks Food Freebies: Mars Real Chocolate Relief Act, Chick-Fil-A's Cow Appreciation Day and Free Dunkin' Donuts

Penny-pincher! Cheapo! This kind of name-calling is welcomed by Teresa Mears. Caught in the Miami Herald downsizing crossfire last summer, she made lemonade out of lemons and launched a web destination for all things frugal: Miami FL on the Cheap

"Everyone -- including me -- is looking for deals now. I'm just trying to make it easy for people to find them," says Mears, a local of 30 years who has made it her job to help both residents and tourists alike find daily deals on things like dining, events and activities. "The national companies always do a better job about getting the word out, but it's harder to find out what local businesses are offering."

We follow her on Twitter @miamicheap, and if you like finding out about free stuff, fast, so should you!

"In South Florida, the winter is more about events," adds Mears, who also edits and publishes editions for Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Florida Keys and Florida.  "Summer is all about the food discounts."

With that in mind, here are some ways to score free food over the next 24 hours, courtesy of our favorite mistress of thrift in town.

Boiling it down on the Twittermonster... you go girl!
Michelle Bernstein knows not to mess with a good thing.  But it's nice to see that a busy bee who juggles ownership of three restaurants, her own TV show, a consultancy with Delta, and a leadership role with nonprofit Common Threads is still able to direct the necessary attention to her bread and butter -- being a great chef and finding time for her flagship gourmet neighborhood joint cum national media darling, Michy's.

Kourtney Kardashian Loves La Sandwicherie

We agree, Kourt
Kourtney Kardashian is "discovering Miami," so it was only a matter of time before she stumbled upon La Sandwicherie, one of our long time SoBe sandwich-peddling faves.

"I always get the same thing... proscuitto and fresh mozzarella on a french baguette with lettuce, french pickles, mayo and their special dressing... it is so delish!" Kourtney blogs. "I can't eat a sandwich without a bag of chips, duh! It's walking distance from Dash, what could be better..."

You go girls.
We called up owner Olivier Sarrat who says Miss Kardashian "comes in a lot" and "is a very nice girl."   That's good to know, because offering those dreams on a baguette to any old meanie just wouldn't be right.

Banh Mi, Pretty Please, @NormanVanAken?

Thanks for Tweeting
Ask and you shall receive.  Norman Van Aken is up in Orlando hanging with his Ritz Carlton crew, and hit up the Twitter about some insane twist on Banh Mi causing a stir with guests...  I fell in love at first bite when I was introduced to these french baguette Vietnamese sandwiches in NYC, so I just HAD to know what Norman was up to.  When were we going to get a taste of these in our deprived hometown!?

After getting the preview to the left (via Twitpic, no less), I cyberbegged Mr. New World Cuisine for Norman's 180 to feature such a treat.  A short tweet later, "You can count on it then!"

Thanks!  We will and are salivating in anticipation.
